单独这一句话在没有上下文的情况下完全可以把过去完成时hadtold改为过去时told。这在表达上完全正确。原句之所以用过去完成时，是强调在afewhoursearlier之前告诉police的，afewhoursearlier是过去，在它之前则是过去的过去，故用过去完成时。
