“加州旅馆”其实象征着承载美国梦的音乐产业，也许真实世界中并没有这样一座旅馆，它吸引着天真的音乐人慢慢陷入这个声名与财富的陷阱中最终无路可逃。歌词营造出一种醉生梦死的感觉，有迷茫、有痛苦，有香车和美酒，有美景和美女，也有压抑与放纵，更有着一种深深的无奈感。具有讽刺意味的是，让老鹰乐队获得巨大声誉和财富的《加州旅馆》专辑，恰恰也成了老鹰的伤仲永之作，之后他们花了三年才录完了下一张专辑，随后就因为内部矛盾而匆匆解散。《加州旅馆》表达意思《加州旅馆》的目标就是那个年代里围绕着好莱坞的这些物质贪婪和享乐主义：包括无节制的滥用毒品、挥金如土和开放的女性（对于最后一点老鹰乐队自己也承认他们乐在其中）。而专辑封面的摄影师也表示，他通过专辑封面想要表达的主题，也是当时那种纯真的丧失和堕落的污染。《加州旅馆》的歌词表面上表达的是一个超现实主义的故事：疲惫的旅人们进驻了洛杉矶中央的一座奢华的旅馆，而吸引着他入驻的是旅馆引人注目且诱人的外观。但很快，他们就发现这是一个噩梦般的地方。加州旅馆的内容结构分为，旅馆外和旅馆内。之外的场面很少，只有歌曲开始的一幕场景：荒漠上的高速公路，但这却很重要，实际上是解读的关键参照点。如果记得Bob Dylan的歌曲All Along The Watch Tower的话，那里城外大量的描写和寓意可以给这首歌很多启示。
